Level Select (When Locked-On to Sonic & Knuckles)

Go to one of the swings that you hang from and grab on. While Sonic is swinging, press Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, Up. You will hear a ring if you entered the code correctly. Pause the game and press A to take you back to the title screen.

Sonic 3 Hyper Sonic code: Once you have activated Level Select and have access to the Sound Test, play the following in sequence: 04, 01, 02, 06, 04, 01, 02, 06. This is the Super Sonic code twice - so you'll hear two sound effects, one halfway through and another at the end.

To activate Super Sonic, you will first need to collect 50 or more Rings. Once you have done this double tap the Jump button to active Super Sonic! Super Sonic will slowly use up rings to remain in his Super state, and will revert back to regular Sonic once he uses up all the rings you have.

Hyper Sonic can also be used in Sonic & Knuckles, though only by breaking an S monitor in Debug Mode, itself being only usable in the game by performing a glitch in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. However, he still works as normal.

Super Sonic can be initiated at any time, as long as you have 50 rings. These rings will then slowly deplete until zero, at which point Sonic will return back to his normal form.

Press 2, 3, 0, 6, 9, 1 on the title screen to unlock the Cheats menu (23/06/91 is the American and European release date of the original Genesis release). INVINCIBILITY makes Sonic invincible. UNLOCK LEVELS unlocks the levels from Part 2 (cheat only available in part 1).
