Type of oilApplicationNotes
PAG oils
for refrigerant R134a
There are various PAG oils with different flow characteristics (viscosities) for use with refrigerant R134a. PAG oils are hygroscopic. This means that cans do not have a long shelf life once opened.Standard PAG oils are not suitable for refrigerant R1234yf or for electrically driven air conditioning compressors.
PAG oil YF
for refrigerants R1234yf and R134a
There are also various PAG oils with different flow characteristics (viscosities) for use with refrigerant R1234yf.
What makes these PAG oils from the BEHR sales brand special is that they are not only suitable for use with the refrigerant R1234yf but can also be used with the refrigerant R134a. As PAG oils are hygroscopic, cans do not have a long shelf life once opened.
PAG oil YF is suitable for both R1234yf and R134a refrigerants.
PAG oil SP-A2
for refrigerants R1234yf and R134a
For use in electrically driven air conditioning compressors that have been filled ex works
with a special PAG oil.
PAO 68 oil
for refrigerant R134a, and in some cases for refrigerant R1234yf and others
Can be used as an alternative to the various PAG oils that are offered for R134a (has the advantage of not being hygroscopic—i.e., in contrast to other oils, it does not absorb
any moisture from the ambient air). The two different PAO 68 oils offered by MAHLE under the BEHR sales brand (AA1 and AA3) can be used in conjunction with numerous
different refrigerants (see product overview).
The AA1 clear version of PAO 68 oil (without
leak detecting agent) can also be used with the
new refrigerant R1234yf as well as in electrically
driven air conditioning compressors in hybrid and electric vehicles.

The appropriate air conditioning compressor oil is determined on the basis of the air conditioning compressor type and the refrigerant used. The wrong choice can lead to damage.
Vehicle- or manufacturer-specific instructions must be followed carefully.

FAQs

How much AC compressor oil goes into the compressor? ›

3 ounces In this example the removed compressor contains 3 ounces so the new compressor should have 3 ounces as well.

How much PAG oil to add when recharging AC? ›

Additionally, the compressor of the AC system is likely to have specifications regarding the amount of oil to be added. You must check the owner's manual before adding more oil. The AC system in most modern vehicles needs a total of 4 ounces (120 ml) of oil.

How do I know how much oil to put in my air compressor? ›

It may be found on the base of the pump for reciprocating type compressors or on the sump tank in a rotary screw compressor. In the middle of the sight glass, you will see a dot. Ideally, you want the oil level to be in the center of the dot. If the oil level is below the dot, your unit needs more oil.

How much refrigerant does it take to fill an air conditioner? ›

According to PG&E, most central air conditioning systems use two to four pounds of refrigerant per ton of cooling capacity. A three-ton air conditioner would typically have six to 12 pounds of refrigerant for a proper charge.

Does AC compressor oil mix with refrigerant? ›

Refrigeration oils are soluble in liquid refrigerant and at normal room temperatures they will mix completely. Since oil must pass through the compressor cylinders to provide lubrication, a small amount of oil is always in circulation with the refrigerant.

What happens if you put too much oil in a compressor? ›

Putting too much oil in the compressor will not shorten its life. But if this oil gets ejected through the compressed air line, you will notice a drop in the compressor's air quality. In short, putting too much oil in the compressor will cause the compressor to leak oil or compressor oil to get into the compressed air.

Do I need to add oil when recharging my AC system? ›

If your compressor is going into a system that has previously been installed, it's important to get as much of the original oil charge out of the system as possible to protect against an oil overcharge. It's typically ok for an extra ounce or two of oil to remain in the system, provided it is contaminant free.

What happens if you put too much oil in your air conditioner system? ›

Excess oil may accumulate in the evaporator and then return to the compressor in a slug. This could overfill the crankcase and possibly damage the compressor. Excessive amounts of oil in an evaporator decrease the capacity of a system.

Does evacuating the AC system remove all the oil? ›

Vacuuming only removes gases, not liquids. Oil doesn't change state to gas, it stays liquid and therefore it will not get sucked out.

How do I know if my AC compressor needs oil? ›

Depending on your car's age, you may need to have the compressor oil changed once every few years. If you hear humming sounds, smell a burning odor, or see smoke when you turn on the air conditioning in your vehicle, you may need to get your compressor oil changed.

How to add oil to a C compressor? ›

Hold the compressor so that the open end is facing upward. Insert a funnel that fits into the opening and slowly pour the recommended amount and type of oil. Then, screw the rear cap on tightly and use a wrench to tighten it further so it's secure. Pour the oil slowly to reduce the chances of spilling it.

What kind of oil do I put in my AC compressor? ›

PAG is actually an acronym for Polyalkylene Glycol, and it is a synthetic oil used in A/C systems to lubricate the compressor. Most newer model cars use PAG as the lubricant in the A/C system. When people refer to PAG oil they typically refer to it in the following terms: PAG 46, PAG 100, or PAG 150.

How many ounces of R134A do I need? ›

All new compressors from Classic Auto Air contain a full system charge of oil. Do not use more than 24 oz. of 134A refrigerant! 1.5 lbs. or 24 oz of R134A is what is required.

How many pounds of refrigerant per AC unit? ›

Typical residential systems hold between 5 and 20 pounds of refrigerant. On average it's about 3 pounds per ton (12,000 BTU) of air conditioning. For a brand new system, it's very easy for us.

Is 3 lbs of Freon a lot? ›

If your unit is low on refrigerant, you will need 2-4 lbs. per ton of AC cooling to refill the refrigerant to optimum levels. Most houses have air conditioning units that range between a half-ton to 5 tons. This means a home with a 3-ton air conditioner will need 6-12 lbs.

How do I add AC compressor oil?

What happens if AC compressor runs out of oil? ›

When your vehicle lacks compressor oil and you continue to use your air conditioning, your compressor can start to smoke. Because there is a lack of lubrication in your car's A/C compressor, the parts can grind onto each other. Over time, this can cause significant friction, resulting in smoke.

How do you measure AC compressor oil? ›

There is no user-accessible oil level check. The only way to do it properly is to recover the refrigerant and oil. drain the oil out of the compressor, separate the oil from the refrigerant and measure the quantity.

Does AC oil stay in compressor? ›

Nonetheless, the oil does not remain confined within the compressor, rather it is entrained by the compressed gas leaving the compressor. It therefore contaminates the refrigerant circuit, interacting negatively with the refrigerant due to its properties as a thermal insulator. What happens to the oil in the circuit?
