A section of the A2 in Kent was closed yesterday (October 8) after a "serious multi-vehicle collision" which saw a man and woman in their 20s sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The road was closed in both directions between the A223 in Bexley and the A282 near the M25 for a number of hours while emergency services attended the scene.
Kent Police and the ambulance service were on the scene with an air ambulance in attendance. The incident saw a BMW overturn, with both directions closed.
National Highways posted a tweet on the incident to inform people to avoid travelling in this area yesterday. The tweet read: "The #A2 in #Kent is currently closed in both directions between #A223 #Bexley and #A282/#M25 due to a serious multi-vehicle collision."

National Highways continued: " Emergency Services and @kent_police are currently on scene. #AirAmbulance is also in attendance."

Police appeal for witnesses following the fatal collision
Kent Police have launched a public appeal for witnesses. They wrote: "Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit is carrying out enquiries and officers are appealing to anyone who saw what happened, or has relevant dashcam footage, to come forward.
"In particular, investigators would like to speak to anybody who saw the vehicle travelling along the coastbound carriageway of the A2 from Bexley towards Dartford Heath prior to the collision.
"Anyone with information should call the SCIU appeal line on 01622 798538, or email sciu.td@kent.pnn.police.uk, quoting reference RY/MS/111/22."

Two passengers pronounced deceased
Kent Police have released a statement on the incident today, which saw two passengers being pronounced dead at the scene. The statement read: "Witnesses are sought following a fatal collision near Dartford.
"At around 10.30am on Saturday 8 October 2022, a black BMW M3 was travelling on the A2 towards the slip road for Dartford Heath, when it left the carriageway and overturned.
"Officers attended the scene along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and the air ambulance. Two passengers, a man and a woman in their 20s, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was taken to a London hospital with serious injuries."

Severe delays across the Dartford area
There are severe delays across the Dartford area due to the ongoing closure of the A2 following earlier's serious crash.
As well as the A2 itself being close to gridlocked, the M25 is heavily congested around Dartford as the build up of traffic begins to stretch in both directions.
There is no indication yet as to when the road will reopen.

National Highways report that a vehicle crossed central reservation
National Highways have provided an update on the road closure on the A2, stating that there has been an "accident involving a vehicle crossing the central reservation". They predict travel conditions to return to normal between 5.15pm ad 5.30pm today.

Inrix have reported on heavy traffic in the area as diversions from this main road are put in place. Inrix said: "Congestion to before Danson with solid queues through Bexley, Crayford and Barnes Cray as people divert."
Heading westbound, slightly less routes are experiencing congestion. Inrix reported: " Congestion to the Ebbsfleet turn off and through Bexley."

A2 Westbound update
Inrix have provided information on the traffic situation on the A2 westbound. They wrote: "A2 Westbound closed, stationary traffic due to overturned vehicle from M25 J2 (Darenth Interchange) to A2018 Old Bexley Lane (Dartford Heath).
"The incident is at Dartford Heath, but a closure has been put in from the M25 to manage traffic. Trapped traffic is being released up and on to the roundabout."

A2 Eastbound update
Traffic Analytics company Inrix have provided an update on the situation on the A2 eastbound. They wrote: "A2 Eastbound closed, stationary traffic due to overturned vehicle at A2018 Old Bexley Lane (Dartford Heath). Congestion to Danson.
"Coastbound trapped traffic under the roundabout is being turned around. The opposite side has a closure further back now. Diversion - up and over the roundabout and back on."
